Casey Gray - Art as the organisation of experience

- Can you tell us something about yourself?
My name is Casey Gray. I am a stencil artist from San Francisco, CA and I'm 26 years old. My current show is titled ILL Romantic at White Walls gallery and it is open until the 7th of August, 2010. When I am not making art, I spend my time skateboarding, taking photos, DJing and hanging out with my beautiful girlfriend Lauren.

- When did you discover your passion for art?
I have been making since I was a little kid. It's the only think I can remember doing consistently throughout my entire life. I started making stencils around the age of 12 or 13, just about the time when I started skateboarding. It wasn't until high school, however, that I began to get serious about my work and it wasn't until years later that I stopped painting in oils and started working solely with stencils and spraypaint.

- How do you create your works?
My process is pretty straightforward for the most part. I shoot a photo of something I want to stencil and I cut it out with an exacto knife. I then spray layer after layer, covering, repainting and changing colors over the course of the painting until I'm satisfied with what I have made. For each piece I may use anywhere from 10-100 stencils depending on size and the complexity of my idea. For most paintings, I try to use an entirely new bank of stencils but naturally some get carried over to other works. A lot of the time I will start a painting with one idea in mind but by the time I’m finished, it’s a completely different piece than I set out to make.

- What are your main sources of inspirations?
I find inspiration in the people and things I surround myself with on a day-to-day basis. The narratives that appear in my work are usually based on some experience that I've lived or have watched someone close to me live. I'm a believer in the idea that the definition of art is the organization of experience and I think my artwork is a testament to that.

- What are your favourite artists? Why?
My favorite artist of all time is the Los Angeles painter, Lari Pittman. His paintings are so incredibly sophisticated and layered but they still have a very folksy, underground feel to them. I hope one day to make work as good as he does. I've been a fan of his as long as I can remember. Some of my other favorite artists are my close friend David Bayus (www.davidbayus.com), Jason Vivona, Jason Jagel, Hiro Kurata, Ryan McGinuess, Fred Tomeselli, David Ellis, Sigmar Polke...I could go on forever. I am a huge fan of street artists as well, although I don't do very much myself anymore.

- Come crei i tuoi lavorii?
